What is an Organic Mattress?
Organic mattresses are constructed in basically the same way as
conventional mattresses, but with dramatically different raw materials.
Instead of chemically bonded polyester batting and other synthetic
insulation, organic mattresses are made with 100% certified organic cotton
and organic wool for cushioning and quilting layers. The wool allows
organic mattress manufacturers to meet national flammability standards
without adding any chemical fire retardants such as PBDEs or boric acid.
Most conventional mattresses are made with polyurethane foam or synthetic
latex, which are made primarily from chemicals derived from oil and
natural gas.
Organic mattresses, on the other hand, are made with 100% natural rubber
derived from the sap of the rubber tree. This is a renewable source that
requires a minimal amount of chemical processing.
