Teragren’s hard and durable alternative to traditional butcher block delivers an intriguing and subtle parquet pattern of end-grain bamboo into modern kitchens. Teragren’s furniture-grade end-grain butcher block is made with a formaldehyde-free and food-safe adhesive perfect for table tops as well as kitchen counters and islands. When used for food preparation areas, an environmentally friendly, food-safe finish is required. (See installation guidelines.) Sealing with a penetrating finish on all sides is necessary to maintain proper moisture balance.

Torzo Surfaces is a US based manufacturer of sustainable surfaces that are ideal for high wear residential and commercial applications. Product applications for these surface products, which are manufactured from agricultural by products and recycled wood materials, include countertops, tabletops, tiles, vanities and flooring. In addition, Torzo Surface product can be used for vertical applications such as paneling, dividers and cabinets.
Currently, Torzo Surfaces has five different lines of sustainable surface products. Each product is offered in four standard colors, including Onyx, Cocoa, Copper and Natural.

Norfolk Pine – made from FSC certified pine

Product: Norfolk pine flooring is an engineered flooring line made from infusing a soft Norfolk pine material harvested in Hawaii. The resulting product is a hard and durable flooring product that has a Janka ball test rating of over 5,000 psi. This hardness makes the Norfolk flooring ideal for commercial applications.
Sustainability: The resulting highly durable Norfolk Flooring product line is made from FSC certified pine material, and manufacturing is done in the United States. The Norfolk flooring is made from 70% FSC certified pine. The remaining 30% consists of an inert non-hazardous acrylic polymer. Due to the fact that the Norfolk Flooring line is FSC, and has no added urea formaldehyde (NAUF), it can contribute to LEED certification when used in green building projects. The Norfolk engineered flooring comes in two colors, natural and copper, and comes with a unique and highly durable UV floor coating system which is ideal for all commercial flooring applications.

Tiikeri – made from reclaimed sorghum stalks

Product: Tiikeri (pronounced tee-carry) is an elegant line of environmentally friendly sustainable surface material from TorZo. Named after the Finnish word for tiger, Tiikeri looks as exotic as its name implies. Made from reclaimed sorghum stalks in an acrylic resin, Tiikeri is an excellent fit for any green building project.
Sustainability: Since Tiikeri has such a high amount of reclaimed material and has no added formaldehyde, when it is used in a green building project it can contribute to the project’s LEED certification.
Like all the TorZo Surface products, Tiikeri is very fabrication friendly. Machining is easy using standard carbide based tooling and gluing can be done using a Titebond II adhesive, or a 2-part solid surface epoxy. Fabricated projects can be coated using any one of several sustainable coatings, such as water based acrylics or urethanes.

Product: Indure is a very durable, 100% urea-formaldehyde free, surface material that has recently been introduced by TorZo Surfaces. Using its proprietary acrylic resin infusion process, TorZo Surfaces transforms recycled wood fiber based boards into high wear surface material. Because of this added durability and hardness, the Indure surface materials are ideal for high wear surface applications such as countertops, vanities, tabletops and flooring.
Sustainable: The Indure surface line is made up of over 65% recycled formaldehyde free material. The remaining 35% consists of an acrylic polymer. Due to the fact that the Indure line is formaldehyde free and has such a high % of recycled material, it can contribute to LEED certification when used in green building projects. Like all the TorZo Surface products, Indure is very fabrication friendly. Machining is easy using standard carbide based tooling and gluing can be done using a Titebond II adhesive, or a 2-part solid surface epoxy. Fabricated projects can be coated using any one of several sustainable coatings, such as water based acrylics or urethanes.

Product: Durum is made from a pressed wheat straw board material that has been infused with a polymer using a proprietary infusion process. The process essentially transforms this green “core” and decorative based Bio-Fiber material, into a highly durable surface product that can be used in a variety of high wear project applications.
Sustainability: The resulting highly durable Durum product line is made up of over 70% wheat straw, and is considered a rapidly renewable resource material. The remaining 30% consists of an acrylic polymer. Due to the fact that the Durum surface line is formaldehyde free and has such a high % of “rapidly renewable” material, it can contribute to LEED certification when used in green building projects.

Product: Orient is an SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) certified recycled wood chip based board material that has been infused with a polymer using a proprietary infusion process. This acrylic resin infusion process essentially transforms this basic building material into a highly durable surface product that can be used in a variety of high wear project applications.
Sustainability: The Orient line is a highly durable surface product that is made up of over 75% recycled chips. The remaining 25% consists of an acrylic polymer. Due to the fact that the Orient surface line has such a high % of recycled material, it can contribute to LEED certification when used in green building projects. Like all the TorZo Surface products, Orient is very fabrication friendly. Machining is easy using standard carbide based tooling and gluing can be done using a Titebond II adhesive, or a 2-part solid surface epoxy. Fabricated projects can be coated using any one of several sustainable coatings, such as water based acrylics or urethanes.

Trinity Glass-A Natural Stone Alternative

Produced by Tiger Mountain Innovations LLC., Trinity Glass Products are individually handcrafted composite surfaces made from recycled glass and low-carbon cement. The surfaces are used for countertops, tabletops, wall cladding, exterior surfaces and more.

Offering the polished look of granite with earthy, muted colors and small particulates, Trinity satisfies the desire for a natural stone appearance without the negative environmental impacts. As with all stone and cement-based-materials, surfaces must be sealed periodically with a stone sealant to ensure ongoing resistance to food and grease stains. However, if damaged by acid etching, the blemish can usually be polished out and the stone restored.

Vetrazzo Countertops

Vetrazzo surfaces offer a stunning and lively signature for residential or commercial projects. This material is comprised of 85% recycled glass and 15% concrete. It is most commonly made into countertops, tabletops, vanity tops, bar tops, hearths/fireplace surrounds and tub decks. All of the glass used in Vetrazzo is recycled, and it makes up about 85% of the final material by weight. The largest proportion of glass comes from curbside recycling programs. Vetrazzo is made in the U.S.A. in a “green” manufacturing plant, using only local labor and resources. Vetrazzo is an extremely durable and easy-to-maintain surface. It’s comparable to granite in strength, scratch resistance, heat resistance, durability, and care & maintenance. Because of the unique nature of the glass used in the production process, every Vetrazzo surface has its own history.

Paperstone Countertops

PaperStone is the ‘greenest’ architectural surface on the market today. Common applications include interior and exterior countertops, interior and exterior wall cladding (Rain Screen), conference tables, plaques or signs, cutting boards, window sills, toilet partitions, and much more. “PaperStone-certified” is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Smartwood and the Rainforest Alliance. It is the only architectural surface presently certified by these demanding third parties.

Phenolic resin and paper composites have long been known to have superior tensile, compression, impact and flexural strengths. They are very abrasion resistant. They absorb very little water. PaperStone also has a Class A fire rating.

PaperStone panel prices are competitive with quality granite and brand name solid surface or quartz material products. As a result of the ease of workmanship and finish the installed prices are often lower.

Squak Mountain Stone Countertops

Squak Mountain Stone

Squak Mountain Stone is a paper and cement-based composite weighing approximately 14.5 pounds per square foot. The material does not contain any steel reinforcing, making field modifications possible. The post-consumer recycled content is 2.5%. The post-industrial recycled content is at least 49%. Size information provided is nominal and not exact. Variation in product size may be ± 1/8″. The entire product contains less than 1% crystalline silica. The slabs require a final finishing sealer after installation and ongoing maintenance of a topical sealer or food-grade countertop wax for maximum resistance. The amount of maintenance is highly dependent upon the user’s cleaning regiment and personal preferences. Recycled content values are calculated based on the ISO 14021 method, which means the weight of all the water used in the process, even if it is not retained in the final product, is added into the total mass of the product.
